Just to address some of the many posts as of recent regarding Music Man sound and pickups. I feel there are 3 main attributes that contribute to the tone of a Music Man. 1. The larger humbucking (or dual coil) style pickup. 2. The bass is active, loud and powerful. Right off the bat I noticed it was very nasally. It took me a minute but it sounds like the tone roll off of a P bass. I have never had a classic Stingray so I really do not have a reference. I have only used HH and 3 band. Is this the sound of a classic Stingray? Overall for the money it is a great Yes. Price. $300. Jun 19, 2004. New Jersey. I just bought a NOS US Music Man SUB. I did some internet research on the model and discovered several variations: 4/5 string, passive/active, StingRay/Sterling. Mine is a four string active Sterling style SUB. My headstock says “SUB.”. I have seen others that say “S.U.B. Bass” and “SUB Sterling.”.
